WebInsight: Adding a Banned Chemicals List

There are two different ways to create a Banned Chemical List in WebInsight:

  • From the Home Page:  In chemical search, click on "Add new set." The link will open a regulatory tree where you can select the regulations to add. You can select the "Share with colleagues" option so that everybody within your organization can see the list. Next time a user logs in, they can select to screen against this list by going to "My Regulatory Sets" (on the Home page Chemical Search menu).
  • From MyWebInsight: Select the option "Add New Regulatory Set" – follow the same steps as adding the lists from the home page. The advantage of the MyWebInsight option is that from this menu, you can also edit/delete sets, which you cannot do from the home page.

Ask the 3Experts....................................................................................................................

"I ship lithium batteries and heard that there may have been a change in how I prepare them for shipping, can you please shed light on this for me?"

The requirements for shipping lithium batteries, either individually or within devices, did indeed change - effective October 1st. Special Provision 190 on the Hazardous Materials Table (49 CFR 172.101), which relates to lithium batteries, has been dropped and Special Provision 189 has been modified for the transport of medium lithium batteries. This means that the exception from marking requirements under Special Provision 190 is no longer in effect.

Ground shipments of medium lithium batteries meeting all other size and packaging requirements under Special Provision 189 must carry a new marking:

"LITHIUM BATTERIES - FORBIDDEN FOR TRANSPORT ABOARD AIRCRAFT AND VESSEL"

The minimum sizes of the letters composing this marking have been mandated at:

  • 0.25 inches high for packages weighing 30 kg (66 lb.) or less gross weight, and
  • 0.5 inches high for packages weighing over 30 kg (66 lb.)

Also, when shipping more than 12 batteries in a package, DOT requires an additional damage warning on the package and an accompanying document to be affixed to the package in a resealable envelope. This DOT-required warning advises handlers that the package contains lithium batteries and that special safety measures are required should the package be damaged.

Special Provision specifications, associated with the Hazardous Materials Table, may be found here on the DOT’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) Web site.
